It’s been five years in the making and it’s here! My book, Mission: Motherhood, is now available on Amazon. (Link: https://amzn.to/4k7VNqE)
To support me, please consider purchasing the Kindle version this week at the special launch price of $.99. (Little-known fact: Kindle sales determine Amazon’s “bestselling author” designation, not physical books.)
I’ve executed many product launches in my marketing career—this one feels different. Delivered just before Mother’s Day; it’s more like a birth—a dream fulfilled.
Here are some of the hard lessons I learned on my perilous, ten-year path to motherhood:
The biological clock is unforgiving:
As women of the postfeminist era, our expectations to have it all—a career, partner, house, and all the goodies peddled on social media—push the pitter-patter of little feet further and further out. Science will have our backs when it’s time for babies, right? Wrong. Despite all the advancements in reproductive medicine, the biological clock is real and relentless. You must plan for it.
Society’s notions of family need a makeover:
The current political climate reveals our culture is still deeply rooted in traditional ideas of family and motherhood. For most of my life, I only knew one way to build a family – 1) Education, 2) Job, 3) Marriage, 4) Sex, 5) Babies (in that order). End of story.
For me, that storyline was a fairy tale—one that kept me from getting the family I wanted. Held as a rigid formula for success, this traditional fairy tale disenfranchises a growing number of women who discover the tiara and glass slipper just don’t fit.
We’re giving away our power as women:
Here’s what’s crazy. For twenty-first century women who are in control of our education and careers, we are somehow powerless in the realm of motherhood, still tethered to tired, old fairy tales dependent on the fatalistic meeting of Prince Charming.
Ladies, it’s time to reclaim our power!
The mission starts now.
If a one-size-fits-all fairy tale doesn’t work for you, then screw it. My mission taught me there’s more than one way to write a beautiful family story. You can write your own.
Here are the new rules we need to sink in:
There’s no “right” way to become a mother. There are many paths. Find the one that works for you.
You don’t need a husband (or partner) to have a baby. Trust me: sperm is cheap and readily available. Sometimes it’s better to go it alone rather than forcing yourself into an ill-fitting fairy tale. It may spare you a costly divorce down the road.
Through Mission: Motherhood and my nonprofit, Cheri’s Choice, I will walk beside all the frustrated girlfriends out there who share the same driving mission to become mothers, but don’t know where to start. I haven’t met you yet, but we are kindred spirits.
Know this—if motherhood is your heart’s desire, there IS a path for you. With knowledge, courage, determination, and a village that loves you, nothing is impossible.
Let’s begin!
