A fertility doctor’s suprising prescription

When I think of visits to my fertility doctor, I picture hormone tests, ultrasounds, and IVF protocols.

Not a prescription to visit a butterfly garden.

This is one of the many things that impresses me about Oluyemisi Famuyiwa MD, FACOG ("Dr. Yemi"), a reproductive endocrinologist and author of "The Quest for Fertility".

Dr. Yemi encourages patients to spend time in nature because she understands one important truth: infertility affects so much more than our reproductive organs.

It touches our minds, our relationships, our identities, and our overall sense of well-being.

That simple prescription dispels a common myth about infertility treatment and patient care: physicians must stay emotionally distant from their patients to preserve objectivity.

But according to Dr. Yemi, compassion and clinical excellence are not mutually exclusive.

In fact, empathy isn't separate from medicine—it is part of medicine.

Her philosophy? "Science without soul is sterile."

And surprisingly, our fertility isn't just about our hormones, ovaries, uterus, and fallopian tubes.

Dr. Yemi describes a woman's body as a comprehensive reproductive orchestra, with our brains serving as the conductor. That's why fertility specialists must treat the whole woman—mind, body, and spirit.

It's one of the reasons she wrote "The Quest for Fertility": to better inform women about how their bodies, emotions, and life choices affect overall reproductive health.

If you're trying to conceive, thinking about your future fertility, or simply want to better understand your reproductive system, I think you'll find this conversation informative and deeply encouraging.

I hope you'll tune in for our interview this Wednesday at 1 PM ET. https://lnkd.in/gpfv-7XA

Because sometimes, better fertility begins with a moment spent with butterflies.
